Shift: Mornings


Under the direction of the Coordinator and consistent with the mission of the YMCA of the Suncoast, the Building Supervisor Opener will meet and greet members, and assist members by referring them to the appropriate staff members for specific membership needs. Educate and enforce operational guidelines and regulations with all members. Maintain all equipment and keep facilities organized and clean. Provide knowledge and concern for the members' well being at all times.


Must be at least 21 years old. Broad overview of the YMCA as it operates as a local, national and international movement preferred. Must have current CPR/AED and First Aid Certification. Upon hire, must complete Intro to the Ys Cause & Culture, Y's Way to Service & Engagement, and I Hear You: Service with CARE. CPR, AED, and First Aid certification required.


Effective communication and interpersonal skills required. At least 3 months personal computer and data entry knowledge preferred. Organizational skills and positive attitude required.

  • Membership Emphasis: Must have least 6 months previous receptionist, clerical or related experience is preferred. Within 90 days of hire, Foundations of Listen First training with the Listen First Skills Assessment required. Within 6 months of hire, must complete Three Keys to Successful Family Engagement and attend both Get SMART and Living our Cause Experience for Frontline Leaders workshops.
  • Wellness Emphasis: Must have general knowledge of selectorized equipment, free weight training principles, and cardiovascular equipment. This person should have a strong personal commitment to health and fitness; have a positive attitude and the ability to work independently.


Must be able to articulate and communicate effectively while assisting members. Must be a good communicator and listener. Must understand the basic common knowledge concepts of member service.

  • Wellness Emphasis: Must be able to lift an equivalent of 50 pounds.


  1. *Respond to member questions and seek out additional information when needed.
  2. *Engages in positive public relations with members.
  3. Maintains professionalism at all times.
  4. Wears approved uniform while on duty, including nametag.
  5. Create a nurturing and safe environment by reporting suspicious activity that may lead to child abuse or may violate the code of conduct. Keep supplies organized, maintain and clean facility and care for equipment.
  6. *Exercises sound judgment in relationship to member safety and injuries.
  7. *Follows all emergency procedures and is able to administer CPR and First Aid.
  8. Takes responsibility for certain housekeeping duties as directed and required.
  9. Attend all staff meetings, in-house trainings, demonstrations and special promotions
  10. Notify your supervisor two days or more in advance if you are going to be absent. It is your responsibility to find another authorized staff person to cover your shift and confirm this with your supervisor.
  11. Wear YMCA staff shirt, name badge and appropriate attire as well as maintains clean and professional appearance for self.
  12. Always be SMART about service.

Membership Emphasis

  1. *Answers the telephone in a prompt and courteous manner.
  2. *Meets and greets members and visitors in a positive and professional manner as a representative of the YMCA; insures the security of the association enforcing policy regarding visitors and visitor log.
  3. Performs routine filing, coping packets and fliers, and keep displays stocked.
  4. *Performs facility access control duties by checking members and program participants entering the building.
  5. Controls the flow of checking in and out equipment (basketballs, headsets etc.)
  6. Check in guest and/Nationwide Membership visitors.
  7. Assist members with Lost and Found.
  8. Assist member with photo re-takes.
  9. Keep supplies organized, maintain and clean facility and care for equipment.

Wellness Emphasis

  1. *Monitor wellness areas, including locker room, and meet and greet members.
  2. *Maintains cleanliness of all equipment.
  3. Responsible for the care, returning, and storage of all equipment.
  4. Fills all bottles and changes towels in fitness center when needed.
  5. Records all maintenance duties in proper logbook.
  6. Control occupancy and traffic flow on all equipment.
  7. *Must be knowledgeable about and able to enforce wellness floor policies and practices.
