SHIFT:  Varies.  Available to be on deck communicating with parents and managing swim lessons. Swim Lessons Monday-Thursday from 5pm-8pm and Saturdays 8:45am-12pm. CPO certification would be an incentive or willing to get CPO certified to help with maintenance of the pool.

RATE OF PAY:  $10.22/hr + possible incentives


This position is responsible for supervision of aquatic related personnel and ensuring the control and safety of participants during recreational, fitness, and instructional swimming. Works with Department Director in implementing new programs and trainings as necessary.


Must be at least 18 years old.  Upon hire, Professional Rescue CPR or Basic Life Support, First Aid, Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification and Oxygen Administration (O2) certification are required.  Within 30 days of hire, Child Abuse Prevention in and Aquatics Environment training required.  Within 90 days of hire, Foundations of Listen First and Intro to the Ys Cause and Culture trainings required.  GetSMART, CPO and Life Guard Trainer preferred.  Must hold a current life guarding certification (Red Cross accepted, must crossover to YMCA within 90 days or first available training.)  Broad overview of the YMCA as it operates as a local, national, and international movement preferred. High School graduate or equivalent required.


Must possess effective communication and human relations skills.  Must pass a swim and skills test annually. Must show maturity and have the ability to relate to children and adults from all social/economic segments of the community.


Must have the physical endurance to sit for extended periods of time indoors or outdoors.  May be required to maintain continual physical endurance for 15-30 minutes of aerobic activity.  Gives and receives detailed instructions.  Must be alert at all times.   Must possess auditory and verbal capabilities in order to monitor environment and swimmers well-being.  Must possess auditory and verbal capabilities to effectively communicate with swimmers and staff.  Must be able to lift 50 pounds and physically able to perform a rescue.


1. Provides direct supervision and maintains high safety standard during recreational, fitness, and instructional swims.

2. Supervise all staff, volunteers and members and ensure they are following all safety standards and personnel policies at all times set by the YMCA

3. Role model all aspects of SMART pledge.

4. Attends all staff meetings and in-service trainings

5. Communicate with supervisor about any concerns regarding staff and members

6. Acts as contact for all members needing assistance on the pool deck

7. Responsible for determining if weather becomes a safety concern and following proper closing policies and procedures.

     A. Communicates all pool closures with front desk and supervisor

8. Create a nurturing and safe environment by reporting suspicious activity that may lead to child abuse or may violate the code of conduct.  Keep supplies organized, maintain and clean facility and care for equipment.

     A. Maintains cleanliness of deck and locker-rooms.

     B. Keeps the deck clear of equipment and puts equipment in its proper place.

9. Follows opening and closing procedures.

10. Engages in positive public relations with members.

     A. Maintains an air of professionalism at all times.           

     B. Wears staff uniform while on duty.

11. Knows all emergency procedures and is able to administer first aid.

12. Reports for duty at least ten minutes prior to shift.

13. Conducts regular safety inspections of aquatic venue.

14. Other duties:

     A. Performs all other duties as assigned.    

     B. Reports all serious incidents.

     C. Attends all staff meetings and in-service trainings.

15. Serves as role model in pool safety.
